Comment:
Airborne 11:15 on 2 Aug 1944 from Downham Market to mark a V1 "doodle bug" flying-bomb storage depot. Flak knocked out both starboard engines and mortally wounded F/L Hibbert. Aircraft partially abandoned by crew, then S/L Bazalgette tried to crash-land. This feat he accomplished but as the Lancaster touched down near Senantes (Oise), 2 km ENE of Nogent-le-Roi, so it exploded. Of those killed, two are buried in Marissel French National Cemetery, but S/L Bazalgette is buried in Senantes Churchyard. His VC was gazetted 17 Aug 1945. F/O Cameron had been a member of F/S Middleton's crew (See: Stirling BF372) when this gallant Australian won his posthumous VC.
